in this lecture, we discuss zhang shizhao’s famous essay “on the meanings of names in translation”(lùn fānyì míngyì 论翻译名义)’, which played a crucial role in establishing what is now the standard translation of “logic” into chinese. we sketch the historical context and analyze and evaluate his argument for providing a phonemic rather than semantic translation.

michael beaney (毕明安) is professor of history of analytic philosophy at the humboldt university in berlin, regius chair of logic at the university of aberdeen in scotland, and visiting he lin chair professor of philosophy at tsinghua university.recent books includethe oxford handbook of the history of analytic philosophy(edited, oup, 2013) andanalytic philosophy: a very short introduction(oup, 2017). a new translation of wittgenstein’stractatus is forthcoming in the oxford world’s classics series.as well as the history of analytic philosophy, his research interests include philosophical methodology (especially analysis and creativity), historiography, philosophical translation, and chinese philosophy (especially ancient chinese philosophy of language and logic). his recent paper on chinese logic is available at:
